how to get sludge out

ok guys and gals, i havew heard of tricks to getting sludge out of a motor but i dont know if they work. so i am going to ask what do you guys use to clean out your motors. the reason i ask is when i changed my upper and lower intake gaskets a few weekends back the top of the motor was so sludge it wasnt funny. it took use 3 hours to clean it up and we also changed out the valve covers instead of trying to clean them. i mean i have seen a change in the oil pressure but just cleaning the upper of the motor. so i wounder what would happen if i got the bottom cleaned and i was going to changed the oil this week anyways.

I knew a guy who was attempting the same thing and the last thing he tried was a can of that Engine Flush that is poured into the crankcase.
He took the Bronco down the road a few miles, came back, and changed the oil.
Went to work the next morning, and the rods started knocking, requiring a reuild.
I really don't feel that other than a disassembly and physically cleaning the pan and internals, you will gain anything.
My dad used to run Non-Detergent oil in the old
Fords after about a hundred and fifty thou, just to not work up the sludge, and we would wear out the speedos with additional miles.

i see well i guess i will just do a regular oil change and put 5w30 moble one synthatic in it and get rid oif the thick stuff that i was using well it had the oil leak

Ya..cleaning out the sludge in the lower end will just lead to more oil leaks. The sludge seals up the old gaskets. I would just use a good regular dino oil in anything with over 100K on it.

5w30 Exxon Superflo, same detergent package as Mobil 1.

not really alot of short trips and i got a 180 thermastat in it

Most of the cars i have seen sludge have been due to a lack of oil changes . If you try to clean it out alot of times you just break up alot of it and it will clog up your pickup screen and could cause even more problems . I would either leave it alone or pull the engine and go through the whole thing.

ATF works wonders. I always top my engines off with atf when they are low right before an oil change. I have 4000 miles on the oil in my ranger and if you pulled the stick you'd think I changed it yesterday.

i see i just changed the oil and didnt get much sludge out so i changed the oil over to exxon 5w30 and thats what i am going to run from now on in the car

Remember, dirty oil is GOOD! It means the carbon/sludge is being suspended in the oil.

ok i have been doing regular oils changes and the car is running better but now i got a antifreeze leak i got to fix and then i got some performance parts to put on the motor and see what happens i really need a set of heads because i think the valve seals are bad on the ones i got

How is this good for the bearings? Carbon is pretty hard stuff.

I have had good luck with gunk crankcase cleaner. I use it at work. I used it on my dad's truck. Here is my story. My dad has an 1984 f350 ford 460. One day a tree fell into his truck while he was doin 40 mph down dryfork road in harrison.
The truck came back from the body shop with 0 oil pressure. I talked to a guy at bischoff's. He informed me that the 460 had a problem with sludgein the oil pan. Oil in this truck was changed every 3000 miles. Ok so it needs to be tore down. Why not give my method a shot. I think the impactfrom the tree knocked some crap loose and stopped up the pickup screen.First thing I did was change the oil. I added a can of gunk. ran the engine for about 5 minutes. Changed oil and filter again. Added another can of gunk. Ran it 10 minutes. Had oil pressure at this point.Changed the oil and filter again. ran it for 30 minutes. Changed oil and filter again. Drove it 50 miles. Changed it again. That was 2 years ago. Truck still going. When you break all that crap up at once it plugs the filter. It is expensive but it works for me.I have done it on the used junk where I work.

i would drain the oil and put atf in it and run it for bout half an hour. then drain it and change the filter and run some good oil. Atf has more detergants in it that will clean it out.
