First off, I'd like to thank everyone that helped me out with my car saturday night after it broke. You guys were a life saver!! :bigthumb :bigthumb

For those that don't know, I was at the track all day today, and something happened with my trans. I haven't pulled it apart yet to see what happened, but wanted to get some ideas before I did.

My car:
-stock motor with bolt ons
-stock rebuilt t5
-upr cable, quadrant, and fiore firewall adjuster
-hurst short shifter

So, after I got knocked out of the bracket racing, test n tune followed, and I pulled the car up to the lanes, and decided to switch lanes to get next to a buddy of mine, and thats when it happened. I went to put it in reverse, and it just FELL into gear way too easy. Thats when I realized the car wasn't moving.

I can have the car in first gear, and let go of the clutch, and it doesn't stall or do anything, driveshaft is NOT turning, its like the car is in neutral but I have it in gear.

Never had any signs of major damage before today, except what I have listed down at the bottom. Its got a stock clutch in it, that has NEVER slipped, or anything. I've never smelled clutch, etc.

Trans was rebuilt a couple months ago. My car was in the high 13's all day, so I don't think I'm at a power level where this trans would break so easy.

A couple issues I have had with the trans in the past couple weeks:

-Trans would go into gear fine at first, but after a about a half hour of driving, the trans would be very hard to get into gear. I'd go under to hood, turn the firewall adjuster counter-clockwise, and this would make the pedal release higher, but the trans would shift much better temporarily. This kept happening over and over, and kept getting harder and harder to go into gear until I would "adjust" it.
-Saturday morning, trans was still hard to go into gear, but when I was driving it, even at 2500 just cruising or at any RPM for that matter, either slightly giving it gas or letting off, it would start bucking, like I don't know how to drive a stick, but this was in every single gear, all the time(full throttle everything was fine)
-ALso noticed when I looked at the fluid, its kind of brown, but I am 101% positive that I put redline in it

Just went and pulled the shifter:

So, its gotta be clutch or trans, and now I'm praying clutch...

Does redline trans fluid always look brown?

And if I do find that the trans is messed up, the car is going to be down for a while until I can afford t56 swap.

Sounds like a tranny problem.

The way you desribe it sounds very much like what happened to me many years ago. It turned out that I broke the shifter fork. Did you try any other gears? Also, check the roll pin in the shifter block to see if its sheared. You can see the top of it in the photo.

Like I said at the track....I'm betting broken shift fork. Go ahead and pull the top off the trans and see. They aren't too hard to change, there are some folks here on the board that can rebuild your tranny fairly inexpensively too.

From the sounds of it it sounds like a shift fork as well. I'm not familiar with a T5 specifically, but would you usually lose every gear? I figured you'd just lose 1&2, 3&4, or 5&6, but not every gear all together.

When I was banging gears in my turbo ranger years ago, I sheered off a rolled pin holding the 3/4 shift fork to the shift rail. I completely lost 3/4 but the other gears still worked. It was a simple fix, replace the pin and be done with it. Luckily it didn't cause any other damage.

The car wouldn't move in any gear. I went to put the car in reverse, and thats when it just fell into gear. I then tried first, and same thing, it was like it was in neutral.

Is a shift fork inside the trans? Yea I guess it would be, I'm thinking of a clutch fork...

If thats what it is, and it is a cheap fix, I'll probably have it fixed and sell the trans.

Finally pulled the trans today. Not really what I wanted to see. Everything came out smoothly, thank god.

I'm not 100% sure what a new clutch looks like, but I think mine is pretty close. I know I haven't put 2,000 miles on the car yet, and it looks like the clutch shows that:

Other than a couple glazed spots on the clutch face, it looks new to me at least(this is the only angle where I could decently get the spots to show up):

http://img2.putfile.com/main/7/20121344376.jpg

Also, where the tob rides on the fork, it looks like it has rubbed the fork raw very quickly. Is this anything to worry about?

And yea, here's a pic of my flywheel which looks to be hotspotted pretty bad. Not really sure how this happened as smyth turned it just before I put it in:

So, once help gets here, I'll be pulling the top off the trans and I'll snap some pics inside there as well. Looks like I've eliminated the clutch.

Also not sure if this is anything to worry about, but when I pulled the trans from the bellhousing, the fork wasn't hooked onto the little ball in the bellhousing. Could I have knocked this off when I was pulling the input shaft out?

Thanks to my buddy Larry, found out that the input shaft would not turn by hand at all. Fst 5pt0 came over and helped me tear the trans down. Not even sure what I'm looking at but here are the pics:

I'm still undecided if I want to have this thing fixed, or just have it fixed, sell it, then get a t56.:confused:

We were able to get the input shaft to move when brandon moved some of the gears around. In the pics, when he would move the very top gear downwards, towards the bottom of the pic, the input shaft would spin by hand then.

All the gears look fine, it was just a bitch to change gears... and like James said when I changed through some of the gears everything would turn but at other times everything wuold lock up.... not sure if this has something to do with the synchronizers?
