View Full Version : Help me build my efi to carb conversion

I have decided to follow through with this project and convert my 88 SD efi to carb. I will be using my stock bottom end with 68K miles and making the swap while the engine is in the car. My current part collection consists of:
Windsor Jr.'s stage 3 ported (intake ported to 1262), polished, and O-ringed.
FMS SVO 1.72 RR
I intend on using the stock cam.
What Intake and carb would you recommend. I'm shooting for 300+RWHP.
Now for the no so fun part, the actual conversion. For those that have successfully done this: Where did you start, what should I look out for, where can I find a better how to, than Fletch's website. His may help, but the wiring is a little vague.
Please don't flame me on the conversion decision. I love carbs and only drive this car 4K a year, max.

I've been shopping around and i'm considering a RPM air gap intake. Any opinions? Do they make a stand alone distributor? Just a one wire hook up and your good to go kind of setup?

What about a Performer RPM ? I love mine makes good power w/ a 650 dp on it

http://www.performancedistributors.com/ scroll to bottom main menu and they have some options to look at, I would like to run that ford hei unit, but still have some stuff to consider about ignition before i fork out more $$ than needed.

errrr DUI setup I meant, but similar, right? Shows how much I have actually looked into ignition since I have a lot else on the plate to accomplish on the motor before that...

I love the rpm air gap intake. bought one for my 66' falcon & and my 89 notch. killer for the street, at the same time dosen't rob much at the track a 10th or 2 max depending on rest of your setup. the vic jr comes on like 5000-6000, the air gap pulls hard 3500-5500. come out & look at my coupe if you want a great example of a killer running 302 that has ran side by side with some bad ass 331 e.f.i. with lots of goodies. you can run mid high 11's easier than you think...all i really have is gt40x heads, e cam, air gap intake, holly 700 carb, billet alum. flywheel.
Let me know, I'll share my experience with the setups I've been happy with which sound similar to what you want.

The Davis Unified Ignition link I posted for you warns about things like this...remember you get what you pay for and sometimes the overseas imported stuff is just not built as close to spec and/or use low grade materials, thats how they can seel the stuff so cheap. That ebay dizzy DOES say it has a 4 year warranty but I would still stay away from it IMO.

holy crap! are running big heads or a 347? that seems kinda big for my stock botton end and heads i'm using. how's it run for ya.

I went an 11.90 at 99mph, on the brakes, in my 88 coupe. It consisted of a stock shortblock, f-cam, twisted wedge heads, performer rpm intake, and a 650dp holley. A t-5 and 4.10s and launched around 5500 rpm on slicks.
A carb is unbelievably simple to tune and for wide open throttle performance...are hard to beat!
