What is the minimum safe oil pressure for a 5.0 ?? I dropped in a GT40 engine with 60k miles and it's reading about 8-10 psi at idle once it's warmed up. :(
This is with an Autometer mechanical gauge, but the stock gauge with a new sending unit reads on the high side ??
It's about 32-35 psi on cold start up and 22-24 psi at 2000 RPMs when warmed up.
This is with 10w30 weight oil. I'm thinking this shortblock had 160k instead of 60k !!

1psi for every 100 Rpms is what I was always told but I've seen the run with alot less for a long period of time

Seems kinda low. I put a brand new mechanical sun pro on and it reads 50 on cold start up. After worm up it reads 20 at 800rpms and on really hot days at idle it will drop to like 17-18lbs. Thats with 10-30w oil. Hopefully you don't have any gunk in your oil pick up line or a weak oil pump. How old is the autometer? I am not sure how much you can trust the stock gauge. Any chance you can try a brand new oil gauge?

It's a new Ford oil pump, new Ford oil pick up tube, newer autometer gauge, and a new sending unit for the stock gauge.
What I don't understand is why the Autometer gauge reads so low, but the stock gauge reads on the high side ?? :dunno:
I think I'll just try some 40w oil and try not to worry about it....

Whats the car Idle at around 800. It woundnt bother me as long as nothing rattles. Try the 10-40wt oil But It will take more power to pump the 10-40 also.

Our blue hatch with 10W-40 carries around 10psi at idle, with 280K on it. been that way for at least 100K, you should be fine!.

buy a hp filter watch your oil pressure rise:)

The stock gauge is worthless, the only thing its good for is making sure you have " some " oil pressure. I'm with the other guys, try a better filter and step it up to some 10-40, and see where its at. 10psi for every thousand is what is recommended.
