Bill France Jr. died today (6/4/2007) at the age of 74
He moved NASCAR into the limelight without losing track of what racing is all about.

RIP Mr. France - your influence will be missed (it already is).

What a sad day for such a great sport. He will be missed.He has been sick for some time though off and on, Still does not make it any easier for his family. He was a good man.:(

You have your facts a bit confused - he was the visonary, its how the latest regime took his vision to the current level that you (and I) have trouble with.

Bill Jr. was the true visonary behind Daytona Speedway, he personally worked long days driving construction equipment to make the dream come true. He also was instrumental in partnering with RJ Reynolds (Winston) to secure the finacial stability and equity to build the dynasty. Bill Jr. was also instrumental in bringing in and developing the young drivers (guys like D. Waltrip) to keep the series fresh and exciting. Bill Jr. was also a real stick to your guns type of guy, especially when safety was involved - he may have been a "my way or the highway" guy, but when your name is on the product, you get what you want.

I agree that NASCAR in 2007 has gotten away from the grass roots of what I like(d) about racing, I hate the commercialism, but - it sells product - you can't argue with millions of people spending billions of dollars.

true he did bring it along in many ways, and brian france will certainly drag it futher into the commercialized pit of hell, but there were some things bill did that formed my opinions of him. we'll agree to disagree. maybe i was a little harsh in my labeling. he did many good things for the sport, and i probably shouldnt dwell on the bad so much.
