My dog was bitten by a snake last night and was wondering what it was. the vet had no idea, but said it was not poisonous. It is now dead, but scared about 10 years off of my wifes life. When I got off work at midnight I was sent to find it and kill it.

Damn! I about pissed myself just looking at it! I friggin hate snakes!! I would scream like a little school girl if I came across that sucker. I struggle taking a crap at work now because the old man had a little garden snake come crawling out of the furnace closet(which is in the bathroom) while sitting on the john. Now I have to check around the toilet every time before sitting down!

I'd guess black rat snake?? I hate snakes also. If they stay in the barn, and eat mice they get to live. Once they leave the barn, and slither across my foot while weed eating:AR15:

Black Rat snake - pretty common, non-poisonous - probably as afraid of you as you are of them.

If the dog is still alive then I would say its pretty safe to assume it wasn't venomous.

It's head isn't pointed and from the pic looks as if the underside isn't yellow, 2 good signs it's not venomous.. what a bunch of sissy's ..And from what I remember about catching them when I was a little kid it's a rat snake..Pet stores used to by them from us

Looks very simiar to the rat snakes that are around my house.

I don't mind that they keep the mice away, but I hate finding them in the yard.

Those Rat Snakes can get huge. Had one that was almost 6' foot long at my parents house. That thing would be all over the place there.

Yep Black Rat Snake, cool snakes we have them all over this area. They are cool to handle, normally pretty laid back. I have see them about 6' long and as big around as a pop can. They are great for pest control

NO snake is more afraid of me than I am of it. I always say...the best snake is a DEAD snake!

Last year I had a party at my house and about midnight as a few people were leaving, I had a 4' snake in the driveway climbing up the rock wall!!!!!

It had a big lump in it's belly, so it had just eaten but it still freaked me out!!!!!

With the woods behind my house, I'm surprised that my dogs haven't gotten hold of one yet.

Speaking of snake stories, I got a good one.

Years back at my old house my wife was cutting the grass, a job I usually do, while I was working on finishing the remodeling work in the house. She was walking along and the push mower made a sound like it sucked up a rope and was spinning it around. As soon as she went to let go of the handle to shut it off a Garder snake shot out of the back of the mower and smacked her in the leg. She started to scream and ran away and the snake chased after her. The mower just caught about two inches of its tail and slung it around a few times. Man was that snake mad and striking anthing that got near it.

I had a real good laugh since I got to see my wife scream and do a funky jig when it was around her leg.

Black Rat Snake as they said, or Corn Snake...

We just killed one a couple days ago, struck at my dog and she ate it...

If she did do it I'd have to say yes :D unfortunately I don't even have a story that good on how I broke it

The dog, Gizmo, who is a pug is fine. She was bitten in the face but it only got her nose. The snake was about 3 1/2 feet long until the shovel cut off its head.
Thanks for the info guys,
Rodney

i would suggest that you switch vets. If they vet can't identify your common black rat snake you have serious problems.

Also why in God's name is that snake still alive??
I have a policy on my Farm. ALL SNAKES DIE!!!!!!!!! I can live with the damn mice. But I mainly have copperheads and I hate those little bastards.

I leave most snakes be, but I still jump if I see one while cutting grass. The little garden snakes eat bugs, so they live (unless the mower gets them before I see them) and the big black snakes eat mice, which is good since my cats only play with them for awhile and let them go. Lazy friggin felines.

i was not home to print the pic of the snake and all my wife took there was the digital camera that the screen is really small on.
The snake is no longer alive...remember the part where I said he was 3 1/2 feet long BEFORE I cut his head off.

good job Rodney. I don't like anything living in my yard unless its my dog. bugs, snakes, birds, and bees can all die
