Well guys, I asked a couple of months ago, as to whether or not you guys were burnt out on buildups yet, and everyone seemed as though they were ready for more. I'll start by saying that several yrs ago I had a nice 90 coupe that I loved. My daughter was born in 98 and money began to get really tight when her mother and I split up. I struggled for a couple more yrs trying to finish the car and see it come to completion. The combo then was a 408 stroker with eagle internals, fox lake ported TW heads and a custom cam from Comp, an efi spyder and all the rest of the goodies. The car ran great, but was in need of a tune, sort of uncommon at the time and autologic was about the only guy on the seen. I finally got to the point where it just had to go, and I sold to a guy I used to work with for 10k, which was exactly how much debt I was in. I obviously took a huge loss on the car, but what I did get out of it, was a plan for the future. I've had time to research, plan and do a little wheeling and dealing to find the parts I need to build the car I want this go around. Unlike the first car that was setup for drag racing only, this car is a compromise between power, streetability and creature comforts. Of coarse this is subject to interpretation, what's considered streetable to one guy, is the worst thing on the planet to another. That being said, the things I've been willing to give up are air conditioning, power steering and power brakes. I'll continue to have power windows/locks, a stereo and even that damned old carpet padding thats probably adding 20#'s to the car. Ok, I'll shut up for now, and start off with a couple of pictures of what I'm working with. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I believe in full disclosure.:D

Cam is installed already, its a custom grind Bennet turbo cam, 240/240 @.575 lift on a 115 lobe sep. Heads are TW highports with titanium intake, SS exhaust valves, titanium retainers and 10 degree locks. I'm hoping to have them back in the next week or 2, and I'll button this thing up.

Just recently, It was a mess a few weeks ago. Having some nice weather went a long ways towards getting it straightened out. If I could only get rid of this 4cyl automatic, I'd have another whole corner cleared out. I need a place to park the bike too. Its hogging up valuable wrenching room.

We took everything out but the carpet, those damn torx bits for the seatbelts are fukken with me. We removed the interior and quarter windows to get it ready for a cage and paint.

Why Accel over FAST?

The guy that helped me build my engine is local and great w/ Accel. He works with Accel, FAST and BS3 and recommended the gen7 over the other 2. It only took me one quick crash course and a few hours on my own to figure the software out.

Also a few people in the Buick V6 world have had some problems arise. Basically the system "skipping a beat" halfway through a run. One guy lost his engine completely, the other 2 got lucky and just blew headgaskets.

Rick93coupe
05-29-2007, 09:02 PM
I decided I was either going to run the Accel or BS3 a long time ago. I have the software for all of them on my pc, including AEM. I don't really think you can go wrong with any of them really. When you start trying to make large amounts of HP, the smallest things can kill a motor. I personally think its just luck of the draw. Keep in mind, Pro 5.0 used to run the old Gen6 DFI.

Ok. So you've heard some things. Who is the guy that helped you build your engine? Did he say specifically what he liked about the Gen 7 over the others?

I thought you were saying there's something you personally didn't like about XFI. FAST and ACCEL have been two of the most popular standalones forever, so when I bought my XFI a year and a half ago, I was pretty confident that it would do just fine. I'm almost finished installing the system (in sequential mode) and I'm really looking forward to tuning with it. I'll post my personal experiences with it in the tuning forum.

Rick, where will you go for your dyno tune?

I like the fact that Gen7 has twice as many cells in the ve and timing table. I like the fact that the gen7 uses a $75 Bosch WB opposed to Fast's $350 sensor. I like the fact that Gen7 can use a factory knock sensor. Also the gen7 can use the stock Buick ignition system w/o a $150 harness. It goes on and on.

My car does run and I am posting my first hand knowledge on the Gen7. Trust me, I wouldn't go out and spend $2K for an ECU package w/o doing a ton of research.

Cells- the guy from Accel (at PRI) showed me how you could change the range of the cells on the Gen VII but not on the old FAST. I think they addressed that on the XFI. I have not compared the two tables, but no matter what, twice as many cells sounds better to me!!

Sensor- I heard you could just get the wideband sensor for the XFI at a honda dealership... are they as expensive there? (and I still need to find out if I need a second WB to read each bank separately?)

Ignition system- does it run in sequential with your stock system? I think the TFI harness for my car was like $75 or something, but then it would only run in batch fire. I bought the dual IPU harness which was cheaper, but we had to get a dual pickup distributor. The car had a stock TFI distributor anyway, so I wasn't too upset about it.

knowledge- I figured your car ran. What I meant was, I'd be freaking out if you told me you had the XFI and got rid of it to get the ACCEL. In other words, I'd know the XFI is junk if you took a hit reselling it to upgrade to the Gen VII. (the last thing someone wants to hear is they blew $2k on garbage)

To be totally honest with you, I can't remember why I bought the XFI. I just know I talked to Precision Turbo about the BS3, I talked to Ed Rice, Mark McKeown, Lee Howie, and FAST directly about the FAST system, and ACCEL directly about the GEN VII. After that, I chose the XFI. Can't remember the reasons because it was a year and a half ago! (here's my fish :HYF: )

I'm looking into taking some classes to tune it myself, but I've also talked to Jeff at Precision about setting up a baseline.

I'm leaning towards Lee Howie doing the dyno tune and then me trying to figure out the rest... I've heard Jeff's pretty sharp though.

XFI is a great choice....it was just my personal choice to go with the GEN7. Both systems will do the same thing and do it well. I guess it came down to the fact that the Gen7 sales pitch I got was better than the XFI sales pitch:lol: Also I got a good deal on a used Gen7:coo1: Anyways, Good luck with your car Sharad!

Car is basically stripped at this point. When I take the K-member and rearend to the scrapyard I'll post up some pics. Next is to remove the factory fuel lines and fuel filler so I can clean up and weld in the torque boxes before the battle box install.

Stock tubs are coming out tomorrow night. I'm going to wait till the new minitub kit comes in before I notch the frame though. Just need to stop and get some more cutoff wheels, the rear deck of the coupe makes it pretty tight in there, not quite as easy to get to as your hatch!

Heads are TFS Highports with 2.055 / 1.625 valves. When I purchased them they were lightly ported. Mike did a valve job with new guides and set me up with some new stainless exh. valves. Intake are Ti. Retainers are also Ti.

That engine needs some rockers. I know a guy who has a set you could probably get if you want them. ;)

Don't worry about cutting that frame. Even if you messed up on where you need to cut or whatever it's not anything you couldn't fix. I may be able to stop by tomorrow night. I'll give you a call.

Well guys, bolted the heads on, only to find out that the deck has been cut on them substantially. Enough that I couldn't line the ports up, and the bolt holes were out of alignment. Turns out my 64cc heads have been milled to 56.5cc's. The only fix for this is to mill the intake to match, or mill the face of the heads to drop the intake back into place.
I decided to have Dave Layer of "Heads up Cylinder heads", mill the heads so that any intake will fit these heads instead of my intake being specific to the heads. So the intake misalignment wasn't that big of a deal, but my biggest concern was going to be the new compression ratio. I was shooting for 8.5:1 but its going to end up being 9.0:1 in the end. I'm just glad my pistons have a 32cc dish in them or I'd be up the creek and looking for a new set of heads!

Got a bit done the last 2 nights. I welded in the torque boxes and then installed some battle boxes I got from Ray at Victory Fab.
I have to say that welding under a car is a whole different game than at a station with clean metal. I'm just getting everything dialed in on the welder, but lets just say I'm not opening up my own fab shop in the future!

Rick93coupe
03-08-2008, 10:32 PM
The welds have gotten considerably better, I was told I needed to get more heat into it, so I fined tuned the settings and dialed it in. I installed the anti roll bar the other night, next is the coilover mount and minitubs and I'll throw the rearend in it. I hope they'll be in by the middle of next week.
As far as the welder goes, its just not in the budget right now. I'm currently borrowing a blue point 110v machine.

Got my Skinny Kid Mid Plate this afternoon. This should help keep the engine together a little longer by taking some of the stress off of the motor mounts. On my next engine I'm going to step up to a front motor plate. That would require changing the entire turbo kit, so this is going to have to do for now.
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o238/Rick88coupe/P1010747.jpg

Whats up Ken? Yeah I'm glad to be making progress. I tell ya what though, long gone are the days of just bolting something on anymore. All this custom stuff is kicking me in the junk!

Didn't get to take the car for the cage install. But I did get to do a few other things that needed done anyway.

I had to make a custom transmission crossmember because a factory one wont even come close to fitting anymore. Being down and back, coupled with the deep sump transmission pan just wouldn't let it fit. I called Ray and picked up some steel from his place and put this together tonight.

Thanks Justin, its been a bunch of work. Just noticed that I had forgot to caption that transmission crossmember picture. I have yet to drill the plate for the mount. I had 2 new ford tranny mounts, so I drilled new holes to match up with the TH400 and put it in place. The tail shaft is pointing slightly to the passenger rear tire, so I need to raise the engine and open the motor mount pads slightly to give me a little bit of adjustment there, before I can drill the crossmember plate correctly.
If only I had a trunk monkey to hand me wrenches from time to time, I'd have been done a long time ago!

Back on topic.

Brian and I assembled the minitub kit from Team Z the other night. After taking them and dropping them off this afternoon I would suggest anyone looking into buying a set, to get them from Wolfe. They look much better and actually fit. Where a standard minitub is around 9" wide in a mustang, the tubs from Team Z are actually 15" wide. Obviously there's going to be a shit load of material that needs to be trimmed off just to make them fit. FWIW

Thanks guys, I'm really happy with it. I'm mounting my cell on the floor. There's framework underneath and the sump will be cut out of the floor as soon as I take the cell out there. I wasn't really concerned with trunk space, knowing I wouldn't be putting back seats back in. I was originally going to sink the cell myself when I got the car back, but when I got to thinking about it, I told him to just put me a nice solid piece of steel back there.

Got the turbo, motorplate and wastegate dropped off over the weekend. The car is coming along great! I forgot to take my camera with me, but I'll be going back in the next couple of days to drop off some more parts and I'll snap a few shots then. I hadn't planned on running a motor plate in the beginning, so I bought the teamZ K-member with the drop mounts. For the sake of noise, we decided to cut off the passenger side motor pad and go with a motor plate. This is going to let me take the 5" downpipe and transition to 4" and snake it between the motor and K-member and run it out the back. It's the same setup he did with his car and looks pretty slick. I'm debating running a 4" bullet back there somewhere for the sleeper effect. lol

Well guys, got some more eye candy tonight. The turbo kit is finished, it has a nice 5" downpipe that tapers to 4" and passes by the starter under the car. To my surprise, he also dumped the wastegate into the downpipe. One of the benefits of doing it this way is to support the heavy gate. There's not enough smilies on here to express how happy I am with the way this thing has turned out!!

However, I do have one question. Which brake upgrade are you using to stop this beast? The rotors in the picture look stock. OEM calipers are only worth scrap price. :D

Rick93coupe

Thanks Rob. Your right, the brakes are stock, well, stock on an 02 GT. Much better and lighter calipers than in 93. Thanks Mark, I've been researching it for awhile. The black will hold up to the heat better than the silver will, and depending on underhood temps, I may end up having to wrap it in the end anyway.
Side note, I set the upper on it today and the box intake fits under the 1.5" hood perfectly. There's no gaskets in place, so I'm going to trim the spacer a bit just for added clearance, but to have this engine under the tiny hood is funny to me!:bigthumb
